Vietri sul Mare
The eastern gateway to the Amalfi Coast. The capital of Italian ceramics, where hand-painted majolica colours the sky with terracotta. A view that embraces the entire coast from here all the way to Capri.
Vietri sul Mare is the point where the Amalfi Coast meets the Gulf of Salerno. It's not an unknown town - anyone who has visited churches and squares throughout Southern Italy has seen its ceramics - yet it remains the least touristy spot on the coast, despite magnificent views and an artisan tradition dating back to the 14th century.
Here everything speaks of ceramics: the roofs, the balconies, shop decorations, even the benches along the seafront. It's the place where folk art is not touristic because it's still rooted in the community. The hands that paint the majolica are the same ones that have done it for generations.

What to See in Vietri sul Mare
Church of San Giovanni Battista
The symbol of Vietri: a dome in blue and yellow majolica that dominates the seafront. Built in the 17th century with a richly decorated interior. The view from here is one of the finest on the coast - from here you can see the arc of the coast stretching from Positano all the way to near Naples.
Ceramic Workshops and Museum
The Provincial Museum of Ceramics tells the story of local ceramic art with artefacts from the 14th century to today. Near the museum, dozens of craft workshops where artisans paint majolica before your eyes. Prices are fair and quality is authentic.
Scenic Seafront Promenade
A flat walk that runs along the coast, with ceramic-decorated benches and views stretching from Praiano all the way to the islands of the gulf. Perfect at sunset, when light gilds the ceramic roofs and the sea turns pink.
Beaches and Sea
Pebble and dark sand beaches easily reachable from town centre. Less crowded than other beaches on the coast, with bars and restaurants along the seafront. The water is particularly clear here, at the gateway to the Gulf of Salerno.
