Best Time to Visit the Amalfi Coast

When to visit the Amalfi Coast? Every month has its pros and cons. Complete month-by-month guide to weather, sea temperature, crowds and prices.

The most common question from anyone planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast is: when is the best time to visit? The honest answer is there is no single perfect time - it depends on what you're looking for. In July and August the sea is magnificent but the coast is overcrowded and expensive; in spring and autumn the landscape is stunning and crowds are minimal, but some services are reduced. Looking for the cheapest time to visit the Amalfi Coast? November through March offers the lowest prices and most authentic experience.

The Amalfi Coast temperature by month ranges from 8°C in January to 32°C in July-August, with sea temperature warm enough to swim from May through October. Many visitors ask about the worst time to visit - the peak weeks of mid-July to mid-August bring extreme crowds, traffic jams on the SS163, and premium prices on everything. Below you'll find a detailed breakdown of Amalfi Coast weather month by month to help you plan.

Best period

May · September

Ideal temperature, swimmable sea, manageable crowds

Good alternative

April · October

Less hot, lower prices, beautiful scenery

Avoid (if possible)

July · August

Month-by-month guide

January

The coast is almost deserted. Many hotels and restaurants closed. Perfect for those who love absolute silence and photography without people in the frame.

February

9–15°C Sea: Cold Crowds: Empty

Similar to January. A few openings for Carnival. Mimosa in bloom on the hillsides.

Ideal period: pleasant temperature, lush green landscapes, relatively few tourists. Ferries restart. Easter brings some crowds. The Amalfi Coast in April weather is perfect for hiking the Path of the Gods.

May

16–24°C Sea: Mild Crowds: Moderate–High

One of the best months of the year. The Amalfi Coast in May offers everything open, sea already swimmable for the brave, flowers everywhere. Book accommodation in advance.
