Meta di Sorrento, Sorrento Peninsula

Sorrento Peninsula — Land of Seafarers

Meta di Sorrento

Village of sea captains and historic shipyards. Alimuri beach, the Basilica del Lauro, and an authentic atmosphere just 3 km from Sorrento.

Meta di Sorrento is the village that most tourists pass through on the Circumvesuviana without getting off — just one stop before Sorrento. Yet Meta has everything you need for a perfect holiday: a sandy beach, a spectacular basilica, a quiet historic centre, and prices more affordable than its famous neighbour.

Meta's history is written in the sea: for centuries it was the main shipbuilding centre on the Sorrento Peninsula. The Meta shipyards built sailing vessels that crossed the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. To this day, the sea captains' palaces in the historic centre bear witness to the wealth brought by maritime trade.

What to See in Meta

1

Basilica of the Madonna del Lauro

The most important church in Meta, dedicated to the Madonna del Lauro venerated throughout the Peninsula. Baroque interior with frescoes, polychrome marbles, and the miraculous statue of the Virgin. The facade dominates the village's main square.

2

Alimuri Beach

Meta's main beach: a strip of dark volcanic sand below the cliff, reachable by elevator or steps. Sun loungers and umbrellas for hire alongside a free section. Clear water and views along the coast. Less crowded than the beaches of Sorrento.

3

Historic Centre and Captains' Palaces

Via Municipio and the surrounding lanes are lined with the noble palaces of 18th- and 19th-century sea captains. Piperno stone doorways, interior courtyards, and wrought-iron balconies tell the story of Meta's seafaring prosperity.

4

Naval Museum

A small museum that traces Meta's shipbuilding heritage: model sailing ships, navigation instruments, nautical charts, and vintage photographs of the shipyards. Entry is free or by voluntary donation.

5

Colli di San Pietro Trail

A panoramic hiking route starting from Meta that crosses the hills all the way to Positano. Around 4 hours of walking through lemon groves, olive trees, and sweeping views of the Gulf. A spectacular alternative to the SS163 coastal road.

The secret base for the Peninsula
