Marina di Praia

A secret beach reached by steps cut into the rock, with the finest sunset on the Coast.

Beyond the Crowds

Marina di Praia is the best-kept secret of Praiano. You won't find it on the main tourist map, because it can only be reached by a short flight of steps cut directly into the rock. What you discover on the other side? A beach of golden sand and pebbles, with turquoise water and almost no one around.

It is the perfect place to escape the crowds of the Amalfi Coast without giving up the crystal-clear waters of Praiano. At sunset the sun illuminates the rock walls above the beach: the best time is around 19:00 from April to September, when the light is almost horizontal and the water reflects shades of pink and gold.

The Perfect Sunset

Marina di Praia has one of the finest sunsets on the Coast. Arrive around 18:30 (summer) and you will have light until 19:30. The beach faces west, so the sun drops directly over the sea horizon. Bring your camera.

History: Tower, Pirates and an Ancient Name

In the Middle Ages Marina di Praia was a lively fishing village, one of many hidden landings along the Coast. The name "Praia" derives from the Latin plaga - shore - and represents one of the oldest place names on the coast. Praiano itself, according to some historians, derives from prai-ano, meaning "open sea".

In the 16th century the Torre a Mare was built, a watchtower erected to defend the population from raids by Saracen pirates who roamed the Tyrrhenian Sea. The tower is still visible today, perched on the cliff above the beach, and remains one of the most visible signs of the Amalfi Coast's defensive history.

The geological shape of the bay is the result of millennia of erosion: the narrow inlet was carved by the sea between two limestone cliff faces. The overhanging escarpment creates a natural shelter from the afternoon sun - no small advantage in the hot Campanian summers - and reveals in its profile millions of years of layered geological history.

Africana Famous Club: The VIP Cave

Next to the beach, carved into the living rock of the cliff, is one of Italy's most legendary nightclubs: the Africana Famous Club. Opened in 1963, it quickly became the favourite haunt of Jackie Kennedy, Sophia Loren and Federico Fellini. Its most extraordinary feature? The dance floor has a glass floor beneath which you can see the sea flowing.

The Africana is still operating in summer and remains a one-of-a-kind nightlife experience. Access is by sea or through a passage in the rock - which adds an extra touch of charm to an already memorable evening.

Below the Surface: Diving and Snorkeling

Marina di Praia is considered one of the best diving spots on the entire Amalfi Coast. The underwater wall descends vertically to 25 metres, offering sea caves, rock formations and impressive biodiversity. Among the most commonly spotted species: moray eels, grouper, octopus and shoals of white seabream.

Night dives are particularly spectacular in summer, when bioluminescence lights up the dark water and nocturnal predators become active. Local dive centres organise guided excursions for both beginners with an open water licence and advanced divers. Surface snorkeling is also excellent: the water is clear and marine life is abundant.

  • For diving, contact the Praiano dive centres at least a day in advance in July and August: spaces fill up fast.
  • The Africana is open in summer only (June–September). Check the official website for hours before planning your evening.
