Byzantine New Year
Amalfi revives its extraordinary medieval oriental heritage in a unique historical celebration.
About the Event
Few visitors know that medieval Amalfi used the Byzantine calendar, in which the new year began in September. The Republic of Amalfi was one of the most connected Mediterranean trading powers with the Byzantine Empire, and this unique cultural heritage is celebrated every September with a historical re-enactment unlike anything else on the Italian coast.
The streets of the historic centre fill with costumed figures representing Byzantine merchants, nobles and clergy, accompanied by medieval music played on period instruments. The procession winds through the old town towards the cathedral, culminating in ceremonies and performances that bring the city's extraordinary oriental past back to life.
The Programme
Byzantine costumes through the old town
Costumed participants in Byzantine dress represent the merchants, doges and sailors of medieval Amalfi, parading through the historic streets to the sound of medieval music.
Music, theatre and artisan crafts
Live performances of medieval music on period instruments, theatrical scenes from the life of the Republic, and demonstrations of Byzantine crafts and trades fill the piazzas and alleyways.
