Tips for getting your bearings

  • The coast is divided into two sides: west (Positano, Praiano) and east (Minori, Maiori, Cetara, Vietri). Amalfi is in the centre.
  • From Naples: the fastest way is a train to Salerno (30 min, €4.80) + ferry. From Sorrento, the SITA bus takes 90+ min.
  • In summer, catch the first morning bus (6:30-7:00): after 9 am the SS163 becomes gridlocked.
  • Ravello is not on the coast but in the hills: you need a dedicated bus from Amalfi (25 min, frequent).
  • On foot: Amalfi-Atrani 10 min, Minori-Maiori 20 min. Nearby towns are easily reached by walking.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Amalfi Coast?
The Amalfi Coast stretches about 50 km along the SS163 road, from Vietri sul Mare to Positano. The straight-line distance is shorter, but the coastal road is winding with dozens of hairpin turns overlooking the sea.
How do you get around the Amalfi Coast?
The three main options are: SITA buses (Amalfi-Sorrento and Amalfi-Salerno lines, every 30-60 min), Travelmar ferries (Salerno-Amalfi-Positano, seasonal Apr-Oct), and private car (not recommended in summer due to traffic and parking). Nearby towns like Amalfi-Atrani are easily reached on foot.
What is the best town to use as a base on the Amalfi Coast?
Amalfi is the most practical base: central location, well served by buses and ferries, good range of accommodation. Positano is more scenic but pricier. Praiano is ideal for those seeking tranquillity. Maiori has the longest beach and lower prices.
How long does it take from Positano to Amalfi?
By SITA bus about 25-40 minutes (depending on traffic). By ferry about 25 minutes (seasonal). By car about 20-30 minutes, but summer traffic can double the time. The distance is about 17 km on the SS163.
Can you visit the Amalfi Coast without a car?
Absolutely yes, and it is recommended. SITA buses and ferries connect all the main towns. From Naples you can take the train to Salerno (30 min) or Sorrento (Circumvesuviana, 70 min) and from there a bus or ferry. In summer, a car is more of a problem than an advantage.
