How to plan a trip to the Amalfi Coast

Planning an itinerary on the Amalfi Coast means choosing the right starting point, the right number of days, the villages to include and how to move between them. The SS163 Amalfitana is a scenic but narrow and busy road: between June and September SITA Sud buses and fast ferries from Salerno, Sorrento and Naples are often quicker than driving. Our planner accounts for seasonality, ZTL, alternate license plates and real ferry timetables to build a workable plan, not just one that looks good on paper.

Every generated itinerary balances beach, culture, villages and food based on the interests you pick. If you have 3 days the plan focuses on the three icon villages (Positano, Amalfi, Ravello). With 5 or 7 days you unlock options for Capri, Procida, Ischia, the Sorrentine Peninsula (Sorrento, Massa Lubrense, Punta Campanella) and treks like the Path of the Gods or the Ferriere Valley. Budget steers the choice between B&Bs, boutique hotels or 5-star resorts and between public transport, private NCC or exclusive boat tours.

The result is a day-by-day plan with rough timings, transfer times, average costs and suggestions on restaurants, beaches and activities typical of each village. You can regenerate it any number of times by changing one parameter and compare versions before booking.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the planner

How does the Amalfi Coast itinerary planner work?
Choose your starting point (Naples, Salerno, Sorrento or Amalfi), the number of days available, your budget, travel season and interests (beach, culture, trekking, food). The algorithm combines destinations, public transport and activities into a day-by-day itinerary with realistic travel times and stop suggestions.
How many days do I need to visit the Amalfi Coast?
The recommended minimum is 3 days to see Positano, Amalfi and Ravello without rushing. With 4 days you can include Capri or the Sorrentine Peninsula. With 7 days you also cover Procida, Ischia or a Path of the Gods trek.
When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
May, June and September offer the best balance: pleasant temperatures, warm sea and fewer crowds than July or August. April and October are ideal for trekking and culture. In low season (November to February) many tourist services, ferries and restaurants close. Read more in our When to visit the Amalfi Coast guide.
How do I get around the Amalfi Coast without a car?
SITA Sud buses link all the coastal villages (Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Salerno) with frequent service. In high season ferries and hydrofoils by NLG, Travelmar and Alicost are often faster and more scenic. For Capri, Procida and Ischia the ferry is the only option. The SS163 road has ZTL and alternate license plate restrictions in summer.
Is it better to start from Naples, Salerno or Sorrento?
Naples is the ideal starting point if you arrive by plane or high-speed train: read our Getting Here guide. Salerno is closer to Amalfi and Ravello, with direct ferries and cheaper parking. Sorrento is the perfect base if you want to combine Amalfi Coast, Sorrentine Peninsula and Capri in one trip.
How much does a week on the Amalfi Coast cost?
An average budget per person is €900 / €1,400 a week in high season: €80 / €150 a night in a 3-star hotel, €35 a day for meals, €60 / €100 for transport (bus, ferries) and €100 / €150 for activities (boat tour, entrance fees, excursions). Under €700 is possible in low season or with B&B accommodation.
Can I visit Capri as a day trip from the coast?
Yes. Hydrofoils run direct from Positano and Amalfi to Capri (40 / 60 minutes) between April and October. The boat tour around the island takes 2 hours, the Blue Grotto needs 30 / 40 minutes in line. For Anacapri and Monte Solaro better dedicate the full day: see the Capri from Sorrento itinerary.
Which is the best village between Positano, Amalfi and Ravello?
Positano is the most photogenic and glamorous, with the best beaches but high prices. Amalfi is central, convenient for ferries and buses, with the Duomo and the Valle dei Mulini. Ravello is the cultural village par excellence (Villa Cimbrone, Villa Rufolo, Ravello Festival) and is far better for sleeping off-season. There is no single answer: the planner mixes all three based on your time.
Does the generated itinerary include transport and travel times?
Yes. Every stop tells you how to move (SITA bus, ferry, regional train, private taxi), the real high-season travel time and a suggestion on average costs. For critical legs (Positano / Amalfi in August) we flag sea alternatives to avoid SS163 traffic and alternate license plates.
Can I regenerate and customise the itinerary?
Yes. You can change starting point, duration, budget, season and interests as many times as you like and regenerate the itinerary. Every configuration produces a new optimised plan. Save the result link to share it or bookmark it for later. See also our ready-made itineraries for inspiration.
